Houma Area News
By Ed DeLorge
September 2007
This report includes details of the
July 21st and the August 18th Houma dances
which were held at Studio 371 in Houma, Louisiana, as well as a
synopsis of the classes that have taken place and classes to come,
along with workshops that were held and forthcoming.
The most amazing things are
taking place in Houma relating to Ballroom dancing. Activities that
have never taken place before to my knowledge. The monthly ballroom
dances, the workshops, the great teachers that have come to Houma to
give exhibitions and teach classes, the New Year’s Eve Bash in
formal, all of these amazing activities are taking place because Ann
and Jim Steven moved to Houma.
Our July 21st Dance
at studio 371 is a great example of the type of talent that Ann
Durocher Steven has brought to Houma. Percell St. Thomass, a
professional dancer and instructor, taught the first hour class in
Tango. Percell is not just a great instructor, but is one amazing
entertainer. During the intermission Percell and Shellie Hubbard gave
an exhibition, in the same dance. All of the elements that one
expects to see in a well presented Tango were so passionately brought
forth in this exhibition— turmoil, romance, heartbreak and the passion
—this was the best Tango I have ever seen. I suppose in ballroom dance
,after the newness wears off, after you have been to a few
competitions, one begins to have a mediocre attitude toward the
exhibitions but this demonstration of Tango was worth an additional
$50.00 at the door
During intermission and
announcements Ann Durocher Steven took the opportunity to hand over
the job of Master of Ceremonies to the amazingly beautiful and
delightful Carrie DeLorge who was truly destined for Hollywood, but
her mother held her back. So we know she will do a great job as the
future M.C. of the Houma Monthly Dances.
The attendance at this
dance was the best that we have had in some time. Thanks to all who
attended, and special thanks to all who brought food and door prizes.
Special thanks to Jim Steven for providing the music.
Our August 18th
Houma dance also was a raging success. Once again, I don’t know how
she does it but Ann brought Steve and Linda Velasquez (National
Ballroom Dance Champions) from Tiffin, Ohio to teach the first hour
class in East Coast Swing. Later in the dance program they gave
exhibitions in Waltz, Rumba, Cha-Cha
and Argentine Tango, all of which were stunning World Class
performances. It was so good, if you missed it you should spank
yourself! Later in the dance Brad and Cheryl Petrie gave an
exhibition in the Cowboy Country Two Step that was great. By the way,
Brad has been doing a workshop in Houma on the Two Step that has been
quite enjoyable to me personally.
Kerry Lovell our
USA DANCE Chapter President made some announcements concerning
upcoming events. Kerry was accompanied by the Lovely Diana Stagg who
is on the board of our local USA DANCE chapter; it is always a
pleasure to see her. Jim Steven once again did a superb job of
dispersing the music and without him we would be out in the cold.
Thanks Jim.
Thanks again to
all who attended and those who brought food and door prizes.
The lovely and gracious
Carrie DeLorge did a great job as M.C. and Ann was smiling the whole
time.
